My love of weaving began in 2016 when I was first taught to weave as part of my degree at Hereford College of Arts. I have always found the construction involved in weaving fascinating, I still get excited about the fact I can make fabric! - And in more recent years I taught myself how to crochet fabric too!
I started my brand A. Weaverbird soon after I got my very first loom, in 2019; my first project was designing and making the fabric to recover my parents dining room chairs. - Photos of which can be seen on my Instagram.
Something very important to me when I set up my shop was that I contribute as little as possible to the waste produced by the textile and fashion industries. So I started keeping all of my scraps of yarn, and any little woven sections that are not part of items; I knew I wanted to keep them and repurpose them I just didn't know how. I had the idea of using them as stuffing for something, and eventually settled on cat toys. So, during lockdown I taught myself how to crochet, and so came about my first set of crochet balls, since then I have made a new collection from hand spun yarn (I taught myself how to spin yarn during my degree). I also use scrap bits of fabric to cover buttons, which are also available in my shop. This is why you may see some of the same fabric repeated on different items in the shop.
All of this means that the only waste I produce from my shop, is water from washing my weaving, which is unavoidable unfortunately, but I still try to use as little water as possible and wash things together so I'm not wasting too much.
Any yarn I weave with that is not a natural fibre is scrap from industry that has been resold. So although there are a few items with synthetic yarn in them, it is actually still contributing to reducing waste from the textile industry.
