I love making sewing boxes – using the crafting technique known as cartonnage!
I begin by measuring and cutting the various box pieces from mountboard and then carefully stretch polyester batting and fabric over them to create the sides, base and top, or lid, of the box. Next, I handmake an elasticated pocket and a padded pincushion and securely stitch them into the box. The exterior and interior surface pieces are then securely glued together and finally I hand stitch the side seam and base join to complete the box!

Sewing box with a removable lid, fixed pincushion and an elasticated pocket. Padded and fully lined.
The overall size of this sewing box is 7 inches (18 cm) wide by 7 inches (18 cm) deep by 5 inches (12.75 cm) high.
The lid itself is 7 inches (18 cm) wide by 7 inches (18 cm) deep by 2 inches (5 cm) high and it fits onto the base, which is 6.25 inches (16 cm) wide by 6.25 inches (16 cm) deep by 4.25 inches ( 10.5 cm) high.
I've covered the outside surfaces of this box with a lovely multicoloured cotton printed fabric with a geometric and floral design in shades of navy, pink, yellow and green with golden metallic highlights. The interior surfaces are covered with deep pink plain cotton fabric and the pincushion and pocket are made from the same fabric as the exterior. All fabrics are 100% cotton and all surfaces apart from the exterior of the base are padded.
Entirely handmade, this sewing box would make a marvellous gift for a sewing friend or even for yourself! The interior of the box is roomy, for storage of scissors, thread and other sewing notions. The pincushion is fixed inside the lid to provide a safe home for pins and the integral elasticated pocket can be used to keep items upright. The lid itself can double up as a handy tray to keep loose items together while you are sewing.
