I love making bags! This bag is to my own pattern and design.
I attended a bag making course a couple of years ago and learnt so much about bag construction. There is a lot to consider - not just the exterior fabric, but the lining, the fittings (magnetic snaps, etc ) and the all - important interfacing. Interfacing gives a bag structure and form and a professional finish.

Layered effect Patchwork Tote Bag, entirely handmade, quilted and colourful.
It measures 17" (43cm) wide by 12" (31cm) high by 4" (10cm) deep. The handles when in use add an extra 11" (28cm) to the height of the bag.
Fully lined with a useful internal zipped pocket.
I've constructed this bag using a lovely 3D effect patchwork technique called "Cathedral Windows". This technique creates diamond shaped layers into which a contrasting patterned fabric is placed and sewn in. The resulting effect is very tactile and interesting.
For this bag I've used a cotton fabric in a shade of jade green to construct the main panels. The layered effect is enhanced by a light green cotton fabric surround.
For the reverse of this bag I've used a whole piece of the main jade green fabric and have quilted it in a cross hatch design. There is a soft layer of cotton wadding sewn into the bag between the outer fabric and lining which gives the bag a lovely soft and padded feel.
The bag base, handles and inside top of the bag are all made with duck egg coloured linen and I've also quilted the base pieces and edge topstitched the handles.
The bag closes with a gold coloured magnetic snap and the lining is a co-ordinating green and white cotton
