The Lunar Collection is very much a mid-century modern decorative design, influenced by wallpapers and textiles of the 1950s and 1960s. I’ve used soft pastel shades with motifs of elliptical shapes and dots - the black background of the stoneware clay acts as a counterpoint to my chosen colour palette. To make each piece, I manipulate the clay while it is soft, apply coloured clay slips with a sponge, then after drying I fire to 1000 degrees C. After the pieces have cooled, I glaze the inside, bringing a flash of colour to the interior, then fire again to 1185 degrees C over a 12-hour period. It’s a slow business, but you can’t hurry handmade ceramics!

Full description
This black stoneware ceramic piece can make a lovely vase for flowers or grasses, can stand alone, or make a feature with others from the Lunar Collection as seen in one of the images. The matt black clay really sets off flowers in pastel shades in your living space, whatever your interior design theme. I’ve called this piece Trixie, and softly moulded the clay to create an informal cylindrical shape, with a glazed interior in iron lustre black/dark blue shiny glaze. The outside shows the natural matt black surface of the clay, and I’ve added elliptical half-moon shapes in soft pastel shades of pink, lemon and grey highlighted with a series of dots which continue around the back of the form. This is my own design, influenced by ‘mid-century modern’ textiles and wallpapers. Trixie is 16 cms tall and 6 cms diameter at the widest point.
