In making platters, I like to use simple shapes to create a soft form. Motifs are created by using coloured clay slip (liquid clay), dabbed on with a natural sponge. I’m inspired by textile designs from the early 20th century and like to use the minimum of tools – I think handmade should be just what the words themselves mean!
Not suitable for food use due to unglazed nature of the surface. Please use a mat to protect polished and painted surfaces. Hand wash with warm water and air dry. Not dishwasher safe.

This handmade one of a kind platter with its softly curved shape and raised edges is the ideal surface for me to create a textured abstract art design. I formed a circle of soft clay, then textured the surface with some dimpled markings and slightly raised the edges of the shape. The coloured clay slip I apply with a natural sponge to create further texture, and I chose some harmonising shades of lemon, grey and olive green to add stripes, rectangles and areas of colour on the surface. To finish the design I used the sgraffito technique to incise some circles into the lemon areas to echo the two groups of dimples on the surface. I prefer to leave the platter unglazed showing the natural matte finish of the stoneware black clay, so it is not suitable for food use. Position on a low table, or shelf in any room as an interior design focal point - art on a plate! Size is approximately 25cm across and underneath you’ll find my potter’s mark of a swallow in flight.
