Jane Kendall 1968-2018
Jane died at the end of October 2018 from an aggressive cancer diagnosed in the Spring. Mike (Jane's husband) and Ellen (Jane's daughter) are keeping the legacy of Jane's amazing work and creativity alive after her untimely death, using Jane's original linocut blocks, and ink recipes, along with the hand-printing and hand-colouring techniques she pioneered and which gave her work such a distinctive style.
Jane loved every aspect of lino cut print making, from the first twinkle of an idea in her head to the first finished print. No matter how many designs she made, there was always an element of surprise at the result.
Jane always had a sketchbook handy, and ideas were usually initially scribbled down as words, with as much writing in her many sketchbooks as there was drawing. The words became images that somehow scribbled themselves into a design. Jane printed everything by hand using a couple of rollers, some paintbrushes and her trusty burnishing spoon. She loved to play with the colours as she went along, and used all sorts of paper to print on. Jane had a love for handmade papers, and often chose papers made from lokta, hemp and banana leaves.
Jane didn't usually number her prints because she only produced a few at a time, and the next time the design was printed she might change the papers or the colours, so they were never quite the same. The finished prints are pegged up to dry on strings that hang above the kitchen table like bunting, as they always did.

A lovely linocut. I love the style of the fox and that its colour comes from the background colour and its white from the paper. One of the things I like best about linocut is the thought that has gone into how the layers and colours work together. Well packaged and quickly delivered too.
