About ERC Leatherworks

ERC Leatherworks

I saddle stitch gorgeous leather into various things

My name is Ed and I work full time in the NHS. I live in the heart of the beautiful Sussex countryside, the rivers and streams of which has inspired the names of the pieces I create in my small home workshop. My grandfather was a traditional leather worker and I have several of his pieces he made and tools he used over his life time, which are treasured family heirlooms. I have been dabbling in leathercraft for many years now as a way to escape the modern world by embracing an ancient art by collecting, repairing and restoring antique leather goods and making gifts for friends and family alike.
Recently, I have decided to dip my toe into selling my goods to the public after being encouraged by several friends and colleagues, so set about creating ERC leatherworks. I love the warmth, texture and feel of leather, how it is wonderfully tactile and gets better with age. It always strikes me how even new leather comes with history already deeply embedded into its fibres – whether this is from the nicks and scars from the life of the animal that it came from, or the mark of the tanner’s hand – and that by creating something from it I am both paying homage to my grandfather and to this ancient natural resource.
I carefully source my leather from J Wood leathers and Leather4Craft and will only use leathers from tanneries that are sustainable and reliable. I make multiples of the same design, with the natural variations leather brings. I change thread colours periodically and sometimes mix leather colours for a 2 or 3 tone effect. If you have a specific thread or leather colour combo in mind, contact me and I will see what I can do!
