Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese pottery technique that involves carving or hollowing out a form from a solid block of clay, rather than using a potter's wheel. The word "kurinuki" comes from the Japanese words "kuri" (to carve or hollow) and "nuki" (to remove). I love this approach because it results in organic, irregular shapes that often reflect the hand of the maker and the natural qualities of the clay.
