Burns' poem "To a Mouse, on Turning Her Up in Her Nest With the Plough, November, 1785" contains so many great lines but "The best-laid schemes of mice and men
Go oft awry" is perhaps the best known. In the case of the mouse, carefully building a snug nest in preparation for the winter came to nothing when destroyed by the plough.

Slate is the traditional roofing material in Scotland keeping people safe and dry much as the mouse hoped its nest would!
