The best known birthstone for September and Virgo is Sapphire, but Lapis Lazuli is the most popular alternative.
Lapis Lazuli is an ancient rock, an aggregate of the minerals lazurite, calcite and pyrite.
It has been prized by human civilisations for over 6000 years.
Cleopatra famously used ground Lapis for her eye make-up and Renaissance artists made a costly pigment from it called 'ultramarine'- think of the blue headband worn by Vermeer's 'girl with a pearl earring'.

Three 4x14mm Lapis Lazuli tubes are linked by 6mm Lapis beads and 5mm Swarovski 'sapphire' bicones highlighted with 4mm gold Hematite.
A mix of Lapis Lazuli and creamy-white Freshwater Pearls are embellished with 4mm gold Hematite.
The Lapis Lazuli beads are a lovely deep blue with flecks of golden pyrite that add a subtle glint, emphasised by the gold Hematite, which add shine.
The Swarovski crystals add a gorgeous glitter of sapphire blue.
The Freshwater Pearls have typically irregular shapes and a beautiful iridescent sheen.
The piece is finished with a Tibetan rose toggle clasp with a gold finish.
The clasp is easy to fasten, and is nickel and lead free.
This classy necklace measures approximately 16 inches (41cm).
Your necklace will be delivered wrapped in tissue and presented in a pretty organza gift bag.
