Mother of Pearl is the name given to the lining or nacre of mollusc shells.
It is a unique combination of minerals secreted by molluscs such as oysters into thin platelets of calcium carbonate that have a width similar to light waves, which gives the nacre an iridescent, shimmering sheen.

These pretty and unusual drop earrings feature a 20x10mm Mother-of-Pearl bead in the shape of a lily.
The flower is a creamy white with the lovely sheen of Mother-of Pearl and a glossy, iridescent finish.
I have threaded a 4mm red Carnelian bead into the centre of the flower and topped it with 4mm beads of red Jasper, creamy Mother-of-Pearl and ivory Czech glass pearl.
The flower hangs from a gold vermeil ear-wire.
Gold vermeil is sterling silver that has been plated with gold, and is stamped '925'.
These earrings measure approximately 1.5 inches (4cm), excluding the wires.
Presented in a small organza gift bag.
