My shop will be closed from 15th December until 26th December 2024. Wishing you all a peaceful and relaxing Christmas.
Due to updated UK government and EU regulations I am not able lo accept orders from Northern Ireland or to ship there. Apologies to those in that part of the UK.
Simple Earth ceramics are made from unglazed black stoneware clay. My aim is to create pieces that reflect the inherent qualities of the clay itself, and to form and decorate using the minimum of tools, so that the finished piece can reflect the material and the maker.
I use just my hands to shape each piece from a flattened sheet of clay, then apply slip (liquid clay) decorative designs with a natural sponge.
There are recurring shapes, motifs and colours in my work, but each piece is entirely unique in its form and decoration. The work is fired to 1185 degrees Celsius in an electric kiln over a period of 12 hours.

This unusual, colourful, fruit bowl makes a lovely table centrepiece. It’s handmade from black stoneware clay with my own original colourblock abstract design of panels and stripes in mingling shades of yellow, lemon, and grey. The design goes all around the bowl, with a different look from every side, as you can see from the images. I form the bowl’s shape by pressing separate pieces of soft clay into a mould, (you will see a faint line of the seams on the outside of the bowl) then create an informal wavy rim to complement the handmade nature of the piece. I’ve glazed the inside of the bowl with a tan brown glaze which fires to blue highlights in places. The outside of the bowl shows off the natural matt black finish of the clay, which contrasts well with the pastel shades of my abstract design. Approx. 18 cms diameter and approx. 6.5 cms high. Underneath is my potter’s seal of a swallow in flight. The bowl could also be used to hold keys, trinkets or treasures but is not suitable for use in an oven, grill or cooking purposes.
