Item details

I like to use the minimum of tools when making my ceramics, so that the handmade element really shines through. The Simple Earth Collection features slip (coloured liquid clay) designs sponged onto the clay before firing to 1185 degrees celsius, so that each piece - as the name suggests - is simply fired clay and nothing else. Every piece is different in form and decoration, though there are recurring themes and colours. And because each piece is individual, I give each one a name. On the base is my potter's mark of a swallow in flight..

Full description

This little bottle is Georgia, just 8 cms high. The design is white on black, featuring seed heads incised into the clay, a technique known as sgraffito. A white stripe with tiny seed heads completes Georgia’s overall look. Georgia looks sweet on a shelf, desk, or any living room space to add a focal point. You can also add more from the Kindred Collection to form your own ‘family group’ of pieces (one of the images shows Georgia with some taller friends) or add other white decorated pieces from my Mono Collection. I use just my hands (you may see the odd fingerprint!) to create the shape from grainy black stoneware clay, and though smaller pieces are in fact more difficult to make than large scale, I enjoy the challenge.
