I transform weathered creel wood into vibrant, one-of-a-kind seaside art pieces

Hi, I’m Mandy, and I create one-of-a-kind seaside artworks from my home in the beautiful coastal town of North Berwick. My pieces are made from recycled wood taken from old lobster creels that have reached the natural end of their lives. For many years, these creels were a vital tool for fishermen, catching lobsters and crabs along our coasts.

The wood I use has its own story to tell. It has weathered countless storms, been hauled in and out of the salty sea, and spent years at the foot of the ocean. Each creel end is unique, marked by old nails, rope holes, bumps, and scrapes from boats and harbour docks – even the occasional mark left by sea creatures. I love these imperfections because they reflect the shape, texture, and life this wood has had.

My partner Jim and I work as a team to bring these stories to life. Jim cleans and prepares the wood, drilling holes and threading durable cords to make each piece ready to hang. I then carefully paint each one, adding found or handmade embellishments before varnishing them to preserve their character.

No two pieces are the same. They are all handmade and will last longer if handled carefully.
