Welcome to my birding world of life-like wool-sculpted birds, where no detail is too small or feather too tiny for me to notice and recreate in fibre.

Hand-made using needlefelt techniques my bird feathers and the plants that the birds come posed on are all made by me using plant and sheared animal fibres, ethically sourced and sustainably used.

I have lots of exciting ideas for bird making this year which are setting my needles aquiver with anticipation.

To kick the year off, I am offering you, for the first time on Folksy, a chance to commission whichever Tiny Bird might make your heart thrill, mounted in an adorable dainty bell jar. I'll explain more in the listing itself, but do plan to purchse ahead of time if you have a tiny bird gift in mind for someone or at sometime special. Each one takes several hours to complete, longer if you want to add botanical elements into the design.

Right now, I am busy designing and making some very colourful tiny birds for Valentine's Day. One or two can try to guess who if you spot the little clue in this message.

Jacqui x

Not everyone knows when they have seen a Dunnock. They can be mistaken for sparrows or simply over-looked as nondescript little brown birds. However, if you have ever stood below whilst one lifts its head and sings a sweet frosty awakening song out to the morning or seen that brown flecked cheek and slate grey chest, you will know the wonder of these shy little birds. Look for them in the undergrowth, hopping below the hedge. They stand out beautifully on the snow, bringing woodland warmth to the crisp white blanketed ground. Leave them food and watch. You’ll soon never mistake a dunnock for a sparrow again.

Safety information

Glass bell jar must be handled with care to avoid breakage. Do not remove the cork from the bell jar. If seperated only gentle pressure should be applied to reattach the bell jar and cork. The tiny bird is permanently attached to its snowy plinth and contains wool products and wire wrapped in yarn forming its legs.

Full description

One-of-a-kind hand-made needlefelt wool Dunnock standing on sparkly woollen snow in their own tiny hanging glass bell jar with a cork stopper and pretty ribbon, all enclosed in protective gift box.

Perfect in every detail, this colourful garden bird of winter measures just over 3.75cms long and 2.5cms tall, stands on tiny wire legs with teeny claws, a minute woollen beady eye and beak, and individually crafted flight feathers. Scaled to 1:4 of life-size, this ‘hedge sparrow’, as it was known in the olden days, fits easily inside the 11cm height by 6cm diameter glass bell jar with integral hanging hook with its own pretty ribbon.

Quirky, sweet and full of character, my birds are tiny works of art designed to be educational and decorative items for the adult collector and are not toys.

All the birds in my 1:4 scale range can be displayed together as a 'true to life' set, perfectly representing the comparative sizes, colours and characters of our garden birds.
