Welcome to my birding world of life-like wool-sculpted birds, where no detail is too small or feather too tiny for me to notice and recreate in fibre.

Hand-made using needlefelt techniques my bird feathers and the plants that the birds come posed on are all made by me using plant and sheared animal fibres, ethically sourced and sustainably used.

I have lots of exciting ideas for bird making this year which are setting my needles aquiver with anticipation.

To kick the year off, I am offering you, for the first time on Folksy, a chance to commission whichever Tiny Bird might make your heart thrill, mounted in an adorable dainty bell jar. I'll explain more in the listing itself, but do plan to purchse ahead of time if you have a tiny bird gift in mind for someone or at sometime special. Each one takes several hours to complete, longer if you want to add botanical elements into the design.

Right now, I am busy designing and making some very colourful tiny birds for Valentine's Day. One or two can try to guess who if you spot the little clue in this message.

It's autumn/winter right now, and I am taking walks through the harbour and along the beach in Whitstable to a wonderful SSSI where kingfishers often find their way in the colder months. It is the flash of blue and orange that gives away the kingfisher. Even when they don't stay still long enough to properly see them, you know they were just there with you. I wanted to recreate that blue flash in a tiny realistic way, so it could be brought into your home too.

Full description

Unique decorative hand-made plant fibre bird feathers, a tiny work of art and bird gift to bring the joy of outside inside your home.

Oh the delight of seeing the beloved kingfisher on a winter beach or summer river. I've made several full size and mini sculptures of kingfishers. I've been inspired this time to recreate, using my own fibre feather-making techniques, each of their lustrous tail feathers in a framed, limited edition art collection.

Choose between a black or white 10.5 cm square shadow-box frame, each holding a truly unique hand-crafted and individually painted plant fibre feather. Each plume, a tiny work of art, is made exclusively from plant fibres including flax, nettle and banana, painted with high-quality inks and held securely on a wire quill. These natural materials sympathetically capture the delicate strength of birds in one tiny feather.

The feather itself is approximately 40mm in length, mounted on non-tree derived paper and behind glass. The light weight 105mm square synthetic frame comes with a kickstand support, though it can also stand upright on its own 35mm edge. UK shipping is free, and a charge is given for shipping to Europe or the USA.

As each feather is hand-painted and crafted, they differ one to the other and are based on the differently patterned twelve tail feathers sported by the common kingfisher. I have included at least one picture of all the feathers together for you in the images.
