I first saw Hypnos in the 1980's in the British Museum and was taken with the idea of a bringer of sleep. Then when I became a full time sculptor in 2001 I worked on a 3 times life sized version of Hypnia for gardens in stoneware ceramics, of which I still have 2, one in shades of brown and one in blue. When making mine I decided that having a wing coming out of each ear would look daft, and it would be more evocative of sleep if one of the wings were to fold over the face. I then sculpted them to be those of a tawny owl to further emphasis the night time theme, and made her hair to be cloud or pillow like. Over time as I slowly moved into patinated foundry bronze, many people said they'd like a smaller version in bronze and so this version developed.

Full description
Designed to hang over, or in front of a bed, to assist in sleep, Hypnia measures 26cm high and 35cm wide and is roughly life sized. Based on the historical bronze version of Hypnos, the Greek God of Sleep in the British Museum, mine is a feminised and Art Deco reworking of the Bringer of Sleep. She is in a limited edition of 25 and the 3rd of the edition is available.
She is a patinated foundry bronze wall hanging sculpture and is suitable for indoor or outdoor spaces. The wings are those of a Tawny Owl, patinated in the colours of an Eastern Mediterranean Tawny Owl and finished with my characteristic contemporary take on an Art Deco style. Hypnia is patinated to look like a marble statue just coming alive. The feel of the presence of this piece changes with the light but she is very relaxing to be around.
She has a fixing bar on the back with several drop in points to hang securely from screws in the wall. She has been exhibited at the Society of Women Artists at the Mall Galleries London, and at the Fresh Air Sculpture Show at Quenington, Oxfordshire.
