Hedgehogs are said to be one of the oldest species of mammal on the planet, having evolved around 15 million yeas ago and changed very lttle.
Also said to have been around during Ancient Egyptian times.
Loved by many, including myself, they have become surrounded in Myths and Folkore, but sadly declining in numbers but helped greatly by many individuals and organizations.

This ceramic Hedgehog has been hand modelled, using a light coloured robust stoneware clay to form two pinch pots joined together, then furher hand modeling to create the body of the animal defining the body, head and nose, with further texture and details added as the clay becomes firmer. The classic form of this Woodland creature starting to emerge.
After carefull drying the hedgehog iis placed in the kiln for an initial firing, before being heavily stained with dark metallic oxides, with further layers of a deep rich brown glossy glaze, with delicate touches of a mossy green where the glaze s thicker, enhancing the form, define facial features and give a contrast between the harder, spiky texture of the body and sofer area around the edge of the face.
fired then for a second time in the kiln to a very high frost proof temperature making them suitable for outdoors but equally attractive indoors.
These have been made hollow but have a pleasing weight to them, measuring approx 12 cm at longest point, approx 9 cm at widest point and 8cm in hieght.
