Welcome to my birding world of life-like wool-sculpted birds, where no detail is too small or feather too tiny for me to notice and recreate in fibre.
Hand-made using needlefelt techniques my bird feathers and the plants that the birds come posed on are all made by me using plant and sheared animal fibres, ethically sourced and sustainably used.
I have lots of exciting ideas for bird making this year which are setting my needles aquiver with anticipation.
To kick the year off, I am offering you, for the first time on Folksy, a chance to commission whichever Tiny Bird might make your heart thrill, mounted in an adorable dainty bell jar. I'll explain more in the listing itself, but do plan to purchse ahead of time if you have a tiny bird gift in mind for someone or at sometime special. Each one takes several hours to complete, longer if you want to add botanical elements into the design.
Right now, I am busy designing and making some very colourful tiny birds for Valentine's Day. One or two can try to guess who if you spot the little clue in this message.

I was making a tiny colourful Atlantic Puffin in a glass snow globe sitting on bright green spring grass as a commission. This obviously led directly to the question ‘what would a winter puffin look like in a snow globe?’ I read some scientific papers about puffin moults and what happens to their beaks after breeding, and referred to a few bird books with great photos. I didn’t find any images of puffins sitting on the snow, so I agonised for a while and then decided I have a ‘artistic license’ card I rarely use, and here he is. Puffin. Winter. Snow. Snow globe. Simple.

Unique tiny needlefelt wool Atlantic Puffin artwork, sitting in a glass snow globe on twinkling woollen snow with a cork base.
Puffins change their colours in the winter, and were even thought to be a completely different species of bird when seen out at sea with their darker faces and less colourful legs and beak. So this is a Christmas puffin perfectly formed and sized at 1:4 scale in a seated position resting back on his ankles, 5cms long and 5.5cms tall within a 10cm diameter and 10cm height glass snow globe. Each tiny wing and tail feather is individually crafted from wool fibres, as his beady eye and sharp sealed beak. His tiny yarn-wrapped wire legs have individual claws, with realistic sealed wool webbing. He is seated on sparkling woollen snow, which is admittedly poetic license but a perfect winter metaphor all the same.
This Atlantic Puffin wool sculpture is to scale with all my other mini-birds noted as being in 1:4 scale.
