I used Islamic Sunn Hemp paper; it's a lovely base for cyanotype printing. I source my paper from tornedgepaper, a wonderful small business. Suzi describes the paper … Traditional Islamic paper from North India made from raw sunn hemp fibre. Handmade on a chapri, a grass stem screen, the impression of the screen is barely visible on the sheet as a laid pattern. Sheets are dried on a plaster wall and surface sized with wheat starch, then pressed between zinc sheets.

Full description

This original Cyanotype print features wildflowers from the hedgerows around my lovely Wiltshire home ... sweet little buttercups, gathered while I was on my local walks.

A Cyanotype Photogram is a photographic image made without a camera, by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material and then exposing it to light.

It is a very Eco-friendly art form.

The subjects for my artwork are wildflowers or flowers from my garden, which Nature produces for me in abundance!

And I use the sun to develop the prints … as an energy source, you can’t get more sustainable than that!

I used some Winsor & Newton Gold Ink during the Cyanotype development process to give it a touch of sparkle! I also used some raspberry red dye, just to add a little bit of pink. I used salt in the wet cyanotype process, because this creates a wonderful crystalising effect, as well as a spritz of vinegar, to lighten the shade of blue in the final print.

When the print was complete, I affixed some of the buttercups I used to create the print, so you get real flowers that you can keep forever.

The print is mounted onto a Cradled birchwood Painting Panel and coated with Cold Wax Medium for protection.
