A very warm welcome to Elflock Woolworks at Waney Grain. I'm Karen and I'm a free-style experimental knitter working with luxurious yarns that feel silky-soft against the skin.My husband, Nick, is a woodturner and he is the Waney Grain side of this Folksy shop.

I love the individuality of hand-spun, hand-dyed art yarns, and I particularly like the fluidity of textural changes as I work these yarns on my needles.

I had some yarn from two tremendously imaginative independent dyer/spinners waiting to be worked. They were both described as ‘Art Yarns’ but were as different in profile as you can imagine! In a moment of inspiration I decided to bring them together in one piece. Convention dictates that we knit uniform gauge yarns at a constant tension to prevent distortion and wobbly edges. But I’m a free knitter, and this gives me the freedom to work eccentric yarns, ‘listening’ to the fibre alignments that the spinner has created, and working reactively, slowly and with respect as I craft every precious stitch.

These two yarns, one peonies and pastels, the other emeralds, citrines and amethysts have blended to form a thrilling Pollockesque splash-fest with fluttery locks and nubbly fluff-tufts.

Utter pleasure!

Full description

This listing is for one of the most eccentric, exciting, flamboyant and dramatic wearable art scarves that I have created!

I call this fabulous scarf 'Fruitfulness'.

Weight: 438g

Length: 251 cms (99 inches)

Stitch: Vertical knit garter

I love bringing the work of two very different artisan spinner/dyers together in one piece of work.

This long scarf is vertically knitted on 12mm KnitPro Symfonie circulars, with 175 stitch long-tail double yarn cast on. Working with patience and sensitivity, I've striped my knitting by alternating between Merino thick and thin yarn and Wensleydale yarn. The contrast between these two yarns on my needles was fascinating, both texturally and dimension-wise. I’m delighted by the eccentricity of the stitch shapes and forms, and by the frisson created by both the colour changes and the textural variations.

‘Fruitfulness’ is a scarf for the confident wearer of avant-garde, outré and joyfully outrageous accessories.

Wear it whenever. Love it wherever you wear it.
