I use Coptic binding, so the book lies completely flat when opened; it's perfect for journaling or sketching.
It’s an ancient form of bookbinding, characterized by sections of paper sewn through their folds and attached to each other with chain stitch linkings across the spine of the book. Coptic bound books traditionally have seven signatures, or sections.
Seven has a long history and has meaning in so many cultures. The number 7 is often considered lucky, and it has a definite mystique, perhaps because it is a prime number.
The origin of seven's power lies in the lunar cycle. The moon has four phases lasting about seven days.
I carry on the “theme of seven” - each of the 7 signatures has 7 sheets; there are 7 stitch holes to bind them together; and I always finish my stitching off with 7 tiny knots!
For this journal I have used cyanotype print spine wraps, which look beautiful when your book is standing on a shelf.
This is not just a journal, it’s a work of art.

Full description
I created this gorgeous journal because your words are worth it!
This beautiful, one-of-a-kind, floral journal would be the perfect gift for any woman … for her birthday, or just because she deserves it!
Part of my Spring Collection of journals, this journal is 8” by 10” in size. This is a wonderful size for a journal … as wide as A4, but not quite so tall.
The covers for this pretty hand bound journal were made using original cyanotype prints, featuring snowdrops, gathered from the hedgerows around my lovely Wiltshire home.
I used Raspberry Red Dye and Rose Cyclamen Ink to give some pretty pink pops to this journal. I also used a sprinkling of Winsor and Newton Gold ink to add a dash of bling. Coarse sea salt in the wet cyanotype developing process gives a wonderful crystalising effect.
To create the prints, I used Fabriano Tiziano art paper in a lovely pale rose pink. It’s the perfect weight for creating the covers for my journals. It’s strong enough to withstand the cyanotype chemicals and the dyes and inks I use in the development process; it can also stand up to the washing at the end of the process!
The inside covers are made using handmade Nepalese Lokta paper, in a lovely airmail blue colour.
The book is stitched together with Teal coloured Irish Linen waxed thread. This is the best kind of thread to use for bookbinding, because it doesn’t stretch. This means that the book stays firmly bound, no matter how often you open and close it!
