Item details

The Lucienne Collection is named after the textile designer Lucienne Day whose work in the 1950s influenced a wide area of design. Her textile ‘Calyx’ was created for the Festival of Britain in 1951 and is still much admired today. She explored many design sources, but my Lucienne Day favourites, such as Calyx, are from the natural world. Decorated with different bands of colour, my own designs feature a nod to cow parsley, seeds, marsh grass, vine tendrils, plough furrows and field fencing I their sgraffito incised markings.

Full description

I chose banded stripes of colour in blue, grey and white pastel shades to decorate this vase, a look to suit your lifestyle and modern home furnishing styles. The vase can show off informal arrangements of garden flowers, wildflowers or grasses, fresh or dried, and gives a lovely light and fresh feel to your rooms. From the base to the top the colour scheme goes from grey to dark blue to light blue to white. The bands feature incised motifs (a technique called sgraffito) of small seed-like circles and grasses, and I mark these into the colour to reveal the grainy black clay beneath. Inside the cylindrical form I have used an iron lustre glaze which fires to subtle shades of very dark blue, mustard and russet. The overall shape I form with my hands, folding a sheet of clay into a soft roundish shape before firing twice to a very high temperature in my kiln. Approx. size is 15.5 cm high and 6.5 cm across the base at the widest point.
