I like to hand form my bowls, rather than throwing on a wheel, as it gives a more informal look to the shape. Seedheads, from cow parsley, dandelions, fennel and dill are recurring themes in my work, and I draw motifs through the white slip to reveal the clay beneath, a technique known as sgraffito.

This one-off design bowl makes a lovely display piece for dried lavender, pot pourri, fruit, or your treasures from the natural world such as pebbles, shells and pine cones. The large bowl has a luscious dark blue/white speckled glazed interior and matt white dappled exterior decorated with incised seed head motifs. I formed the shape from black stoneware clay, creating a softly wavy asymmetric rim. On the outside the bowl has a matt finish which allows the black clay to peep through, and I incised a random pattern of seed heads, which I continued over the rim of the bowl. Inside I have used an iron lustre glaze which turns midnight blue with white speckles during the firing in my kiln. It’s large and shallow – 28cms diameter and about 4cms high. Underneath you’ll find my potter’s mark of a swallow in flight. It’s a decorative piece, so not suitable for cooking or serving foodstuffs.
