Item details

The collection is the result of a long period of experimentation with black stoneware clay. My aim is to create pieces that reflect the inherent qualities of the clay itself, and to form and decorate using the minimum of tools, so that the finished piece can reflect the material and the maker.

I use just my hands to shape each piece from a flattened sheet of clay, then apply slip (liquid clay) decorative designs with a natural sponge. The motifs are influenced by textile designs and artwork from the early 20th century.

While there are recurring shapes, motifs and colours in my work, each piece is entirely unique in its form and decoration. The work is fired to 1185 degrees Celsius in an electric kiln over a period of 12 hours. Pieces bear my maker’s mark of a swallow impressed into the base.

Full description

Handmade from unglazed matt black stoneware clay, this little tray/dish features folded edges with textured roll detailing at the corners and is handy for popping your keys, earrings, or loose change into, or for displaying your seashore finds of shells and pebbles. I decorated the surface with abstract squares, rectangles, dots and lines in lemon, orange-yellow and buff and then incised some curvy motifs into the colour before firing to 1185 degrees C in my kiln. Underneath is my potters’ mark of a swallow in flight. The piece is an informal squared shape measuring approx. 11 x 11 cms. As the surface of the black stoneware clay is unglazed, it is not suitable for food use.
