Kindred Collection
The Kindred collection is a family of pieces in black stoneware clay. I like to reflect the inherent qualities of the clay itself, leaving it unglazed, and I form and decorate using the minimum of tools, so that the finished piece can reflect the material and the maker.

I use just my hands to shape each piece from a flattened sheet of clay, then apply slip (liquid clay) decorative designs with a natural sponge. The motifs are influenced by textile designs and artwork from the early 20th century, while the forms have echoes of Cycladic and Minoan votive pottery.

There are recurring shapes, motifs and colours in my work, but each piece is entirely unique in its form and decoration. The work is fired to 1185 degrees Celsius in an electric kiln over a period of 12 hours. Pieces bear my maker’s mark of a swallow impressed into the base.

Full description

Theo is handmade from black unglazed stoneware clay which I manipulate with just my hands and the minimum of tools to form the overall shape. Before firing, I decorated the form with abstract motifs – a main panel and small square in pale green, a vertical stripe in pale blue, and two horizontal stripes in a darker green and deep blue. I used the sgraffito technique to score a wave pattern on the pale green, revealing the black clay beneath, and scored a series of horizontal lines on the dark green and dark blue stripes, which continue around to the back of the form. Theo is 20 cms tall, and looks striking as a single piece, or can stand with others from the Kindred collection to form a ‘family group’ – one of the images shows Theo with two others from the collection. Alternatively, the single form can make a contemplative focal point for practisers of yoga or mindfulness meditation – I practise mindfulness myself and find it helps my practice sometimes to fix my view on one simple serene object.
