Leaves, seeds and stems make lovely imprints in soft clay, with ferns, grasses and sage being some of my favourites. I think the natural marks they make complement the natural clay material. I also really enjoy making jugs, as the opportunities to vary the size, shape and angle of handles and spouts offers endless scope for creativity. So the two come together in my sage leaf jugs!

I love to use leaf imprints in clay, and sage leaves are one of my favourites. I made a set of three jugs in black stoneware clay and pressed the sage leaves into the clay, then highlighted with white colour before firing. I fashioned them with big beaky spouts for a modern, cheery look and each jug is slightly different in form and decoration. The insides are glazed in a rusty brown shiny finish so that they can hold water if you want to display a flower or two, or keep some fresh herbs within easy reach in the kitchen. Alternatively, the three jugs can make an eye-catching set when displayed together. The outside of each jug is the natural matt black clay finish, so please note they are NOT intended to hold liquids like milk, cream or juice, they are decorative pieces or little vases.
