The collection is the result of a long period of experimentation with black stoneware clay. My aim is to create pieces that reflect the inherent qualities of the clay itself, and to form and decorate using the minimum of tools, so that the finished piece can reflect the material and the maker.
I use just my hands to shape each piece from a flattened sheet of clay, then apply slip (liquid clay) decorative designs with a natural sponge.The motifs are influenced by textile designs and artwork from the early to mid 20th century, while the forms have echoes of Cycladic and Minoan votive pottery.
While there are recurring shapes, motifs and colours in my work, each piece is entirely unique in its form and decoration. The work is fired to 1185 degrees Celsius in an electric kiln over a period of 12 hours. Pieces bear my maker’s mark of a swallow impressed into the base.

Full description
Becky (on the left in the group of three) is handmade in black stoneware clay and is part of the Simple Earth Collection. The outside is unglazed, showing the black clay just as it is. I decorate using soft pastel shades which show up well on the dark unglazed background, using ceramic slip applied with a natural sponge, masking off areas with torn paper to form the stripes and rectangles, while dots are formed with a brush. Becky features soft grey, pale blue, lemon, dark blue and yellow in the colour scheme. Becky is 14.5 cms high approx.and on the base is my potter’s mark of a swallow in flight. Becky looks good on her own as a focal point, or displaying dried flowers or grasses, or as part of a group from the Simple Earth Collection - one of the images shows Becky with some friends!
