What a lot of work and somehow, only 5 pictures to show it off, just doesn't do it justice. There is so much to look at and so much going on with this box than at first glance. The concept for it's out side appearance comes from an old art movement called De Stijil, which means " The style" I'm sure at one point you have seen paintings of primary coloured squares, rectangles and lines from a period dating back to after the 2nd world war. I had seen a smaller box done like this once and it was only 2 colours and a bit more simple looking. I decided to just go nuts with mine, using more colours and random shapes and wrapping these patches around the edges or corners of the box letting the grain of the patch follow through to the next area. Full description
A very special wooden jewellery box. Using every space available for it's size. A well seasoned wooden carcass was made with quarter sawn timber, which was then covered with lots of random hard woods (Guitar material off cuts) that had been machined to roughly 3mm thickness. These where then cut to random size and shape and carefully fitted together in a de stijil manner. These woods are; rosewood, olive wood, maple, quilted maple, Bubinga, mahogany and mahogany curl. The box hinges and lid handle are made from solid ebony. The inside area has olive wood dividers seated on a blue velvet material. The door panel inside the lid veneered with zebra wood, with olive wood round the outside edges and covered on the other side by blue velvet. All inside dividers are in facet made of olive wood with blue velvet beneath or behind them. Certain areas are made and screwed to together to help gain access to moving parts inside the box in case of accidental damage that need repairing. The drawer itself is a very special touch. In one of the pictures you will see a olivewood and bubinga button at the back inside edge of the box, when pressed releases the sprung loaded drawer. Which can be pushed back in again to secure with a very satisfying click. The lip edges to the box and lid are veneered with zebra wood with an ebony black line to offset it. All corner edges are inlayed with teak linings. Approx 260cm wide 210cm deep 120cm tall. Great gift for 5th wedding anniversary
