To be honest, I made these ages ago but they were a lot different looking than when they are now. They had been in the shop for a long time now, and when something this small does not sell it get either turned into something else or get put on the fire. Yes its a shame, and no I don't want them myself because I have enough of these sort of things.
So they nearly went on the fire, but I thought, Hold on a minute!
How about a burnt type finish.. A Japanese Style of wood finishing and preserving. Apparently I would be committing copywrite infringement if I were to use the name here! go figure!
So I gave it a go....and I have to admit - it took a bit of learning but as I went on It got better and better. And I have gotta tell ya, thought this is not my kind of style at all, I'm really liking this and starting to like it. There is quite a bit of work when brushing and brushing the right way, also the amount of stain used and to what level of strength etc. It does take practice.

Full description
A pair of handmade lamina
This is an traditional Japanese technique of burning and charring wood. Mainly for protection for wood exteriors like fences or gates etc. It has gone to a whole different level, where it has been foted wood tea light holders. Made from off cuts of poplar and Sapele. Made to a flat base with rounded top and bottom edge. copper metal tealight holder insert.
These are finished using a Japanese method of preserving wood then using a blue spirit stain.
They are roughly 3" square or 78mm by just over an inch thick. (25mm)
The technique is a very effective finish to furniture and other wood items. But it has to be done in the right way for creating a great effect. This can be a timely process of burning and then brushing with different types of brushes dependant on the type of wood. There is a technique to the burning, brushing and staining that is significant for its effectiveness. This can raise the grain in the wood and be eye catching, further more, the introduction of different colour wood dyes and stains can push it to yet another amazing level. But again, more work is required to get the staining effect just right.
