Just a quick note to say I’m away for the week and so will not be able to send any orders received until the weekend, normal service will resume on the 22nd jan. This is bad timing on my part as I’m being featured on folksy in their meet the maker slot this week. If you would like to read the interview I did with fellow folksy maker Ebby and Flo pop over to blog.folksy.com to read it. I’m also offering a 10% discount on everything in my shop to run along side the article this week. Simply add the discount code at checkout.
I first sunk my hands into clay before I went to school, as my mum and dad were both keen knight school potters. As most potters do they became obsessed with the medium and set up a little pottery in our old garage. So I have been faffing about with the stuff for years. I studied glass and ceramics at uni and from there got a job designing tableware for Hornsea pottery. I was there for three years before moving across the Pennines to set up my own little back garden pottery.
My work is inspired by nature, mainly animals and flowers. I make handmade stamps and use these to make up my designs along with hand made stencils and some hand drawing as well. I work in stoneware and brush on glazes, I fire up to 1200 c and use a sand based medium that gives me a lovely biscuit coloured base to glaze on. I make using coiling and slumping techniques. This gives my work a slight wonk, with just adds to their charm and character. They are very textural and im often complimented on how tactile my work is. I also work in white stoneware and use sgraffito to decorate. Each piece is painted in layers of coloured slips once dry enough I scratch draw and carve through these layers to reveal the clay body beneath. I add wire that is fired into the clay as an extra little design feature and add dots of contrasting colour to make extra impact. Everything is safe to use, you can put them in the microwave the dishwasher the oven and they are also frost proof! Tough as old boots :)
