I've always loved making things and I've been fascinated with textiles since I was really small. I could knit and sew before I went to school and, when I was young, I often disappeared for hours and then reappeared with something I had created from materials around the house.
When I grew up I became a teacher and developed another love - writing.
My rag doll making started as a hobby a few years ago and soon developed into a little business. I now make dressable character rag dolls who live in a fictional village called Mulberry Green.
I also write stories on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest about my little characters because I love how young children get totally absorbed in imaginary worlds, so that the characters become their friends and they themselves become part of the story.
I live in a little seaside town in Devon and work in a lovely sewing room, which is full of light and overlooks the garden and the sea. In the Winter months, it is really cosy, with lots of fairy lights - a lovely workshop, in which to create my little characters and write my stories.
Nothing appeals to me more than an art or craft item that has been lovingly created from beautiful materials, with lots of attention to detail. (I always feel that part of the creator has gone into creating something when it is carefully and lovingly made.)
My toys are all made of best quality CE safe de Witte doll skin and CE approved mohair doll’s hair. I use polyester stuffing with a fire safety mark and natural beeswax colouring for their cheeks. Their clothes are made from best quality fabric and wools and are CE safe. The dolls are made using the Waldorf method and attached parts are all double stitched for safety.
They are not suitable for children under three, as the clothes often have small buttons and fastenings.
Mulberry Green
Mulberry Green is all about a time, now gone, but not so very long ago, when children had a great deal of freedom to explore their surroundings and use their imagination in play - a time when the world moved at a slower pace and things were made to last. To celebrate this heritage, wherever possible, I use traditional crafts and materials to create my dolls and outfits.
I created the Mulberry Green range for children aged 3-7 but I have found that it is very popular with people of all ages.
Maisy and Mo, dressable and very huggable rag dolls, are the main characters
Maisy (her mum calls her Maisy Muffin) and her best friend Mo live in a pretty village called Mulberry Green. Maisy lives with her mum and dad on Mulberry Farm and Mo lives in a little cottage at the top of Mulberry Lane with his mum, dad and baby sister Daisy. His dad is the vicar.
In the village there is a post office, a bakery, a sweet shop, a hardware shop that sells all kinds of useful things, a greengrocer’s, a sewing shop, where Maisy’s mum buys all of her wool and fabric, a grocer’s – where you can get just about anything, a children’s dress shop and a ballet shop that sells all of the things the Mulberry Green children need for their Saturday ballet lessons.
There is also a little church and, of course, a school – Mulberry Green Infants’ School, where Maisy and Mo are pupils.
Maisy has a cute little puppy, called Molly and two goldfish called George and Geraldine
There are other children in Maisy’s class at Mulberry Green Infants’School -
Violet, a very self willed little girl, who often gets herself into trouble and lives at the grocer’s shop.
Amber, who is always very well dressed and doesn’t like to get dirty. Her mum and dad keep the sweet shop.
Oliver and Olivia who are twins and live at the greengrocer’s and help their dad with the deliveries. They have a puppy called Oscar.
Rosie, whose mum owns the sewing shop and has two kittens called Honey and Marmalade
Ruby, who all of the children envy because she lives in the Post Office and gets to use the rubber stamps at the counter,
Marigold whose dad keeps the hardware shop and is very keen on growing things.
Milly who lives at the newsagent’s and has a kitten called Boo
Bobby, whose dad is the local butcher and has a dog called Max
Tilly, whose mum owns the dress shop and her cousin Amelia, whose mum runs the ballet school
and rough at the edges Billy Spraggs, who lives at the baker’s, has a pet rabbit called Arthur and is not too keen on school.
These character rag dolls and their pets are all available in my shop.
Maisy and Mo love nothing more than exploring the world around them and having adventures with their friends. You can read about their adventures on my Facebook and Instagram pages and all of the stories are on my Pinterest board ‘Mulberry Green stories’.
Story books about the adventures of the Mulberry Green characters are also available in my shop. There are 31 full colour illustrated stories in each book with a map of Mulberry Green and a page showing all of the different characters in the stories. Several different titles are available. The stories are suitable for reading to 3-7 year olds and each story is just long enough for bedtime.
My dolls are all 28cm tall and Baby Daisy is 14cm. Clothes, made especially to fit them, are also available in my shop. The clothes are made using traditional sewing techniques and best quality materials and are often tailored or embroidered.
The Mulberry Green pets are embroidered onto felt and are stuffed with fire safety stuffing.
My dolls make lovely gifts for young children or indeed anyone who is young at heart!
They are all handcrafted with love.
Little Nippers are a whole community of tiny wood mice, who live in a maze of little burrows and passages underneath the floor of the barn at Mulberry Farm. They are sometimes very hard to spot and Maisy and her friends rarely see them - but they are always there. The tiny mice all have their own cosy little cottages inside the burrows and work very hard in the fields, gathering seeds and berries, tiny fruits and bits of grain to take back to the burrows to be made into food. They even have their own little barn shops, where they can share the things they find in the fields and get the food they need to look after their families. They are a very happy little community who all take care each other. All of the Little Nippers are named after herbs or meadow flowers. There are also baby Nippers, who are called Pip Squeaks. These come in tiny fleece sleeping bags. (They are very small and are not removable from the sleeping bags.)
The little mice are all made from CE approved doll skin. The cottages and barn shops are all made from felt and cotton fabric. The mice are not suitable for under three years because of occasional tiny decorations, buttons etc.
Little Nippers are 13cm tall and Pip Squeaks are 7cm
The little mice, along with the cosy cottages and barn shops, can all be purchased from my shop. The embroidered and appliquéd cottages all have a cosy little bed inside, just the right size for your little mice and a tiny chest of drawers.
The farm shops have a little serving counter so that a little mouse can be popped behind the counter to serve all of the other little mice. The shops are decorated with appliquéd and embroidered groceries to feed the community of Little Nippers.
Story books about the Little Nippers will soon be available in my shop.
Next time you are out, keep your eyes open and you may just see a Little Nipper scurrying about.
I hope you love my little creations as much as I love designing and making them!
Welcome to their world.
Unique little friends for unique little people!
