I’m Jo, the owner/craftswomen of Jo’s Leather Crafts, based in Fleet, Lincolnshire. I like to mix functionality with art, making handmade and hand stitched leather products that are unique artwork pieces. I love working with colour and individual designs on wallets, journals, key fobs bookmarks and more. I also make 3d leather roses in various colours and have recently branched out into leather canvas artwork.
I started leatherwork at the age of 16 in 2013 after the floristry college I was going to attend closed before I got to go, so I had to look for an alternative career. At the time I was really into steampunk and liked the idea of making my own outfit accessories so was thinking of trying out leatherwork. A friend and I got talking and it turned out he used to make dog leads, so he showed me how to saddle stitch and lent me some leather tools, which started the passion for leatherwork and creativity. I bought my own tools and practiced, read books about leathercraft, watched videos and practiced some more. I was soon moved out of the house and into the studio because of the noise I was creating (although some things still do end up being stitched on the sofa in front of the tv) I also managed to break a piece of marble in half… So that was the start, there might still be lots leather off cuts and bits on the floor but I am now the self-taught owner of Jo’s Leather Crafts, and love making all things leather.
Now this is my full-time occupation (covid knocked my small business back a few years) I have a laser engraver helping me create even more detailed wallets and key fobs, though I still break out the swivel knife occasionally. I mainly do pre-made pieces using my own patterns, though I do take on most custom requests. Working with customers to create their vision, be it a memory of a beloved pet on a bookmark or a sporting passion on a wallet as an example.
