Full description
A handsome kingfisher, posed in flight with outstretched wings has been needle felted using woollen fibres and a barbed felting needle. White core wool fibres are bound together and sculpted into shape using the felting needle to form the basic shape. A top coat of blue and orange merino wool fibres has been added to the surface with appropriate markings around the head. The tail and wings of the kingfisher have been formed from pieces wool felt covered in woollen fibres. The leading edge of the wings have been wired to enable them to be shaped as required. The legs are formed from wool covered wire and the eyes are beaded. The beak is made from air dry clay.
The kingfisher has been mounted by means of a transparent perspex rod onto a rustic wooden base. The kingfisher is roughly life sized with a wingspan of 30cm (as posed) and the ornament as a whole measures approximately 25cm tall.
