Welsh Bardic Poem Bowl: Taliesin " My Creation"

Size: 8.5" x 3.75" x 2.5" (21.5cm x 9.5cm x 6.5cm)

A large, solid, hand-carved bowl of birch wood.

The bowl rests at an angle that allows contemplation of the interior design.

Taliesin is the quintessential bardic poet of the British (Welsh) Tradition.

Probably alive during the 5th c. AD, he became the role-model and inspiration of many later bards and poets. His works are all in Early Medieval Welsh, and have a characteristic simplicity that hides a profound complexity of imagery and meaning.

Around the sides is a text from Taliesin in Medieval Welsh:

NYT O VAM A THAT PAN Y'M DIGONAT,

A'M CREU A'M CREAT O NAW RITH LLAFANAT:

O FFRWYTO, O FFRWYTHEU, O FFRWYTH DUW DECHREU;

O VRIALLU A BLODEU, O VLAWT GWYD A GODEU,

O PRID, O PRIDRET, PAN Y'M DIGONAT,

O VLAWT DANAT, O DWFYR TON NAWVET.

which can be translated as:

"It was not from a mother and a father that I was made,

And my creation was created for me from nine forms of consistency,

From fruit, from fruits, from God's fruit in the beginning:

From primroses and flowers, from the blossoms of trees and shrubs,

From earth, from the sod was I made, from nettle blossoms,

from the ninth wave's water."

The decoration on the inner bowl brings to mind the many different levels of creation and how they are linked together in one complex flow of consciousness.

This unique bardic bowl has a lot more going on beneath the surface than at first appears:

as well as acting as a conne
