HANDWOVEN DORSET BUTTON AND KUMIHIMO BRAIDED NECKLACE
I made this necklace using a combination of two techniques. I made a Dorset button for the pendant, by weaving cotton and sparkly thread around a brass ring. The colours are purple and pink and the sparkly thread also has a little blue and gold in it.
The creation of Dorset buttons was originally a large cottage industry in Dorset, England between 1622 and 1850, after which they were overtaken by machine-made buttons. This ancient craft is undergoing a revival and I love making them using modern materials and contemporary designs.
I also made a braid using the same colours and the Japanese Kumihimo technique. I have used nickel-free silver plated jewellery findings to attach the Dorset button to the braid. This is a longer style of necklace which simply slips over the head.
This stylish necklace is my own design so it is truly unique.
