When I first started making jewellery I gained a bit of notoriety as "the welsh cake earrings lady" and so I thought it appropriate, now that I am making dollhouse miniatures, to make a welsh cake baking scene. The welsh do love their welsh cakes! It has been really interesting to delve into the history of the welsh cake, bakestones and even what people used to use before mass produced packaging was a thing! One of the awesome unintended side effects of making miniatures is the diverse range of knowledge and skills you can pick up simply from the need to reproduce something accurately.

The Welsh Cake is traditionally made with flour, lard, sugar, currants, egg and spices and is cooked on a bakestone. The bakestone, sometimes known as a planc or griddle, was originally made from a thick slate or soapstone that could be placed directly over a fire and was a favoured cooking method of the Welsh. Since the 19th century bakestones have been made of steel or cast iron and are still used today.
This miniature 1:12 scale Welsh Cake making scene has been hand made with great attention to detail. I have carved the rolling pin from wood, constructed the tiny fluted cutter from pewter sheet, made the bags from paper and the bakestone from polymer clay. The food items are all made from polymer clay and the oven cloth is cotton. Everything is glued in place on a wooden board. The board measures 3.8cm x 6cm.
Please note this is a collectible and not intended as a child's toy.
