This kingfisher has been posed in flight with outstretched wings after a successful dive for a fish. The kingfisher has been needle felted using woollen fibres which are bound together and sculpted into shape using a barbed felting needle. The basic shape has been made using white core wool with a top coat of blue and orange merino wool fibres added with appropriate markings added around the head. The tail and wings of the kingfisher have been formed from pieces of stiffened wet felt and the leading edge of the wings have been wired to enable them to be shaped as required. The legs are formed from wire and the eyes are beaded. A beak made from silk clay has been added with a small grey needle felted fish held within it.
The kingfisher has been mounted by means of a transparent perspex rod onto a rustic wooden base. The kingfisher is roughly life sized with a wingspan of 27cm (as posed) and the ornament as a whole measures approximately 23cm tall.
Please note: this is a collectable ornament. It is not intended as a toy. It contains wire and small parts that could cause a hazard to small children.
