Full description

These round stud earrings feature striped fordite which has been bezel set in sterling silver and they have been finished with silver posts and scrolls. The fordite has wobbly stripes of cream, beige and light khaki green with a little red and blue. There are very small dimples in the surface from air bubbles in the paint. These studs measure 9mm by 16mm with the post approx 1/3 of the way from the top, fordite is lightweight so these aren't heavy in the earlobe. Comes gift boxed.

Not come across fordite before? It is the name given to waste paint build up that forms in spray booths at automotive factories, with each vehicle a new layer of paint is added getting baked hard after each one. When the build up gets thick it has to be removed and lapidarists discovered that it could be cut and polished to show off the multitude of colours. I believe this material has come from a Cadillac factory in the late 1950's (I spent a lot of time looking at old colour charts, it's quite a rabbit hole to go down). I cut and polish this material myself and have quite a stash from a range of years and factories so if you like the idea of fordite but want something else drop me a message.
