In Hindu mythology, moonstone was believed to be solidified moonbeams.
In ancient Rome, the stone was linked to the Moon Goddess Diana and was thought to bring love, wealth and success.
Moonstone is one of India's traditional wedding gifts, and is thought to bring luck in love.
Many ancient cultures associated the stone with the moon - when light strikes moonstone, a phenomenon called "adularescence' can be seen, a shimmer which looks very like moonlight shining through thin clouds.
Moonstone and Pearl are considered birthstones for June and Gemini, and have a long association with marriage.

The centrepiece for this elegant necklace consists of five 6mm, AA grade, faceted white moonstone 3D triangle briolettes, separated by six 4mm, faceted grey Moonstone coin beads, highlighted with tiny 2mm sterling silver rounds.
The Moonstone beads show a lovely shimmer of adularescence as they catch the light.
I have set them between alternating 4mm lavender Shell Pearls, and 4mm white Mother-of-Pearl beads.
Shell Pearls, manmade from nacre, the same material that oysters use to make genuine pearls, are considered the best quality replicas you can get.
These Shell Pearls have a delicate, dusky lavender hue, and a lovely sheen.
The Mother-of-Pearl beads also have flashes of iridescence when they catch the light.
The necklace finishes with a sterling silver lobster clasp.
This gorgeous necklace measures approximately 15 inches (38cm), and is designed to fit choker-style.
Your necklace will be wrapped in tissue and presented in a pretty organza gift bag.
Price includes delivery within the UK.
