Genetically speaking, people and fruit flies are surprisingly alike, with about 61% of known human disease genes having a recognizable match in the genetic code of fruit flies. Fruit flies and humans use the same or similar genes to develop into adults. That's why fruit flies are used in genetic research labs.
There are studies that show that:
male fruit flies rejected by female mate are more likely to consume food with naturally occurring alcohol than males that have mated successfully - a brain chemical that regulates the flies’ appetite and is predictive of their thirst for alcohol has an equivalent that has been linked to alcohol consumption in humans.
Fruit flies have a built-in compass in their brains that enables a sense of direction
It’s been discovered that fruit flies are capable of ‘thoughtful deliberation’ not only impulsive decisions
Males use their wings to vibrate and make a kind of ‘love song’ to females.

My little version of fruit flies was made as part of the Motheaten Hierarchies body of work. Each fiy measures approximately 12mm long, making them 4 or 5 times larger than in real life. They are created using wool which has been needlefelted to create the 3D body then stitched with vintage thread.
The fabric is beautiful vintage cotton and measures 10cm x 11cm and the piece is framed in a small box frame 18cm x 18cm x 3.5cm
The common fruit fly or Drosophila melanogaster or common fruit fly has been used in six different Nobel Prize winning studies. More information below.
