The loss of natural habitats the wild birds use for their nesting sites has and is causing a decline in our bird population, we provide a helping hand by making wooden nest boxes that give a safe and warm environment in which the birds can raise their young.
We ask our customers to provide a suitable site where the nest boxes can be fixed, where they will hopefully attract some feathered lodgers.
This is a custom-made item and cannot be returned unless faulty.
Please note that if your order is being posted outside mainland UK, you (or the recipient) may have to pay customs or VAT charges and a handling fee. The seller is not responsible for any charges or fees that may incur.
Full description
With this Sparrow nest box (suitable for fixing to a tree or wall in your garden), you can give a warm and safe place for sparrows to nest and rear their young. Birds are like us they have to find the perfect home and once your nest box has been chosen you can watch the process of the nest building, brooding, feeding and finally the young birds emerging from the box. The birds are now in their fledgling state and still totally reliant on their parents for protection and food and as such very vulnerable however after 2 - 3 weeks the youngsters will be able to fly and start to look after themselves which might possibly give the parents the opportunity to return to the box and raise a second brood.
When installing your nest box make sure it is facing in a north/easterly direction this avoids direct sunlight, driving winds and rain and place it at a height of at least 2 metres.
For general maintenance you should clear out the nest box in October, November or December making it ready for the following years nesting season, to facilitate this the screws on the lefthand side of the roof as you face the box can be removed to gain access after which the roof can be re-fitted.
The nest box has been painted with a water based varnish to help protect the wood and should you want to change the colour or re-varnish please use a water based paint as this will not harm the birds.
