I've recently got into making tea cosies, started with one for myself for my work teapot, made a couple on request for a friend, I then found I couldn’t stop so here I am with a folksy shop!
I had this idea for the cosy late on a Sunday, I couldn’t lay my hands on a full ball of cake coloured yarn (if you knew of my yarn hoarding problem, you’d have been as surprised as I was that I didn’t have any to hand), just a small oddment which was just enough to do the cake part as a single strand – what can I say? I’m impatient, when the whimsy takes me, I have to do it or I won’t be able to sleep.

Novelty tea cosy crocheted in acrylic DK yarn tripled for thickness, this cupcake style cosy with sprinkles and a cherry on the top is a perfect gift for someone who loves tea and cake.
I made it to fit a medium sized 4-6 cup teapot, Price & Kensington brand to be specific but does also fit the other generic teapots I use as models for my woolly wonders.
There is a hole at the front for the spout and a flap at the back with crochet bobble closure to allow for the handle
Will it keep your tea hot?
It jolly well should! Although only a DK yarn, I’ve worked it using three strands and it is quite thick. I couldn’t say how long it will keep your teapot hot for as I haven’t done any scientific testing, just personal use of a single strand thin cosy which lasts up to 40-50mins because it never takes me any longer than that to polish off a full pot by myself! I should mention that the very small band of brown between the cupcake wrapper and the icing is crocheted using only a single strand of yarn but this shouldn’t make too much difference in the heat holding capabilities – see more info under ‘inspiration’.
It can be washed by hand. For my own personal ones I only spot wash the tea stains under a tap with a dot of washing-up liquid. Never had a problem doing that After washing, let dry naturally.
