I've recently got into making tea cosies, started with one for myself for my work teapot, made a couple on request for a friend, suddenly found myself obsessed with them and now have a 'cosy of the month' at work to keep things interesting.
I have a ridiculous stash of yarn and while looking through it for inspiration for my next creation, I spotted the ball of grey. How dull I thought, what could I make with that? Then an image of an elephant, trunk 'n all came into my mind and the rest is history.

Novelty tea cosy crocheted in acrylic DK yarn, this somewhat semi-impractical tea cosy is (probably) a one-off. Made on a whim, just to see if I could.
A fun gift for the elephant lover in your life or a gift to yourself if you are that elephant lover.
I made it to fit a medium sized 4-6 cup teapot, Price & Kensington brand to be specific but does also fit the other generic teapots in my large arsenal of spouty ceramics I use as models for my woolly wonders.
Is it really impractical? Not exactly but...
Although the trunk covering the spout does not get in the way of pouring tea, it is likely to get tea dribbles down it in use. The ears will flap forwards as you pour but they don't get in the way as you do. There is a button fastening at the back for the handle.
But will it keep your tea hot?
Erm, maybe not as much as you'd like. It is only a single layer of yarn. It will keep it hotter than using nothing at all but not as hot as a lined, insulated one. If you are serving the full pot within 40-50mins, you should be just fine.
Don’t let that put you off buying it, I mean just look into those eyes… can you really say no to those?
It can be washed by hand. For my own personal ones I only spot wash the tea stains under a tap with a dot of washing-up liquid. Never had a problem doing that.
