I've always been fond of the traditional Norwegian and Swedish designs for bowls. Practical and great looking, the design dates back to Viking days so when the sycamore in St Peris church Nant Peris was polarded, I was delighted to get some clean branchwood for this bowl.
As with wooden spoons, it only needs rinsing, wiping and drying after use. Every now and then when dry, rub in a fresh coat of walnut or linseed oil to replenish the wood. If you intend it for dry use (fruit bowl or as a decorative piece) then it will take a beeswax polish and should come up bright.
The final finish contains walnut oil - be carefull if nut sensative.

A bowl carved from Sycamore wood in a Scandinavian style.
The wood is slightly spalted and contains a few nice burls so it has plenty of character . The chipcarved rim pattern is what would have been favoured in old times to liven up a (quite probably) drab world - it can have the same effect these days! The paint is food safe acrylic and the bowl itself was treated with a good basting of hot foodgrade linseed oil. The final finish is Penprysg beeswax and walnut oil conditioner.
14 inches in length, 5 inches wide and about inches deep at the shallow midpoint , it was carved with ax, adze and hook knives
Like every utensil I make, this is for use. Salads, rice, porridge or veggies wouldwork. But of course, once again with my bowls, it would make an equally jolly fruit bowl or the like.
