I grew up in a household of traditional English food - there was no spice rack in our family kitchen. During decades of international business travel where incidental pleasures away from business was discovering the social, history and food of the lands I visited, and I revelled in new tastes, loving the spices of the world. The inspiration to what was to follow was a trip to Ethiopia and my first taste of Berbere spice. Now I'm settled in beautiful rural Shropshire the time for my passion for spices has come.
Every purchase is roasted, ground and packaged to order to preserve the unique fragrance of the blend.
Why Varangian?
My family traces most of its history from Scandinavia with a side lineage back to a proconsul of the Ottoman Empire of Byzantium.
The ancient trade routes from there brought spices to the north and emperors employed men from the north as their elite guards. The Varangian guards.

Zanzibar is a fragrant and unique spice blend from East Africa. One portion is 30 grams of spices roasted , ground and blended to order. It has a zesty, earthy fragrance from coriander and cumin and a note of aniseed from fennel, It is delicious in curries, on roast potatoes or just with a bowl of rice.
