Full description

This fused glass display dish has been made using the strip construction technique.

The strips are cut from opaque white and transparent lime green art glass, which are laid on edge and fitted tightly together. It has a substantial chunky feel, due to the on-edge construction, and a semi-transparent appearance. The dish measures 14cm square with a gentle curved shape and a maximum height if 3cm. Looks great as a display item on a white shelf or table.

Construction notes: The strip-cut technique involves precisely cutting a large number of narrow strips of glass, usually in contrasting colours, and packing them tightly together on edge. Placing the glass on edge is what gives the finished item its chunky, substantial appearance - there is a LOT of glass in this dish for its size. This piece used 135 strips in four different widths, all of which were cut by hand and stacked on edge in a chequerboard design. The glass lay-out is then kiln-fired at 815°C which fuses all the separate elements together and gives the soft rounded edge. Using alternating transparent and opaque glass strips gives the semi-transparent appearance. After fusing, the resulting blank was placed over a ceramic mould and fired again at a lower temperature to give the final shape. Final photo shows the glass for another dish in my strip construction series cut and laid out before fusing.
