Full description

This is a copper bowl I have decorated with glass enamel. It measures 74mm in diameter, 20mm deep. The enamel has been built up in thin layers of powder each fired to red hot.

The bowl has been enamelled black on the outside. This balanced the tensions to which the bowl was subjected when each layer of enamel built up on the inside was fired at 700 degrees centigrade. There may be between five and ten such layers.

When I was satisfied with the pale turquoise surface of the inside of the bowl, I scattered little heaps of pink, white, and black enamel over its surface and drew a steel tip through the surface and through the added colours, trying to depict a swirl of clouds. The bowl was in the kiln at 700 degrees, cooling as the kiln door was open. In this situation the colours could not be distinguished and the enamel would set around the steel point if I did not withdraw it promptly. At the end of the day I accept the design the process allows me.

You might use the bowl as a dressing table tray or a table centrepiece. Among other uses, customers at fairs have suggested that my bowls may be just the thing to use to drop a tea bag on when you take it from your mug or cup or may make good soap dishes. It really is up to you.

Your bowl will be sent by Royal Mail, tracked 24, at no additional cost.
