I think I drew almost the entire picture before I added the arms and face to the hat. It totally changed the narrative. Now the image has a proper story to tell and that's a thing I love to create.

Full description

This is Gerald Smyth-Jones. He's of the Devon Smyth-Joneses, not the Dorset. They are very easily confused. Gerald is very much a ladies man and in the past would doff his hat at any passing female. However, age and all that doffing has resulted in a little arthritis in his shoulder. Gerald was at a loss as to what to do but then while perusing the North Devon Gazette he spied an advert for a self waving hat. Now Gerald goes out every morning around the local parks. It has led to several charming adventures.

This is an original A4 (210mm x297mm) sized artowrk drawn by myself. It is not a print. It is drawn on an off white heavyweight watercolour paper (I forget which make). It is drawn using fineliner pigment pens and acrylic paints. The image occupies all but the bottom 2cm of the paper which has been left blank.

Designed by Steve Allender in Lynton, North Devon
