I was given this wood by friend from his woodpile, and whilst a mystery I believe it to be a fruit wood of some kind.
The infestation of wood worm was not obvious from the bark and wasn't revealed until I began forming the shape. Rather than dispose of it immediately and recalling that this infestation was part of the wood's story now, I continued and finished it as best I could to become a pleasing shape with a good lacquered finish.
Not one for the trypophobic!

Full description
Turned in August 2024 this flask shaped vase stands at 240mm tall by 100mm in diameter at its widest with a 20mm opening. It would suite dried, silk or otherwise artificial flowers as water would cause the wood to expand.
Made from a mystery wood which I was given, you can see where the wood has been poorly stored and has been home to woodworm. The wood has now been treated through freezing, but the life of the woodworm can be seen in the pockmarking and gouging of trails throughout its height.
